Will I have to pay spousal maintenance forever? | Austin Divorce Lawyer | Kimbrough Legal, PLLC
Hello, I'm Tycha Kimbrough. If you're dealing with a divorce, and if you know that you're going to be the party that may have to pay spousal maintenance, you may be wondering whether you have to pay spousal maintenance forever. Well, first and foremost, spousal maintenance is granted in only limited circumstances in Texas. Next, when spouses on maintenance is granted, it generally is not for longer than a three-year time periods. There is an exception to that rule. If let's say your spouse has a mental or physical disability that prevents him or her from taking care of oneself, and they also don't have any property that they could sell in order to meet their basic needs, then in that situation, that's where the court could perhaps grant indefinite spousal maintenance. If you need an attorney to protect your interest, definitely give my office a call.
